Women’s Rights/ Health
What is your position on the availability of comprehensive and affordable health care for women, contraception coverage, etc?
I fully support the availability of comprehensive and affordable health care for women including contraception coverage.
I buck my party on Planned Parenthood. As a young couple, my wife needed the services here for screenings, exams etc. I support funding these centers as they provide extremely vital services for women and families. Contraceptives are absolutely key. Promoting safe sexual practices as well. Combined, promotion of contraceptive use and safe sexual practices will prevent discussion of the most controversial topic of our time; handling of unwanted pregnancy. Insurance companies should provide such services for no or very low charges. It is much more expensive to treat costly medical conditions caught late.
I support keeping abortion safe and legal and having all insurers, including public insurers, pay for abortion and contraception, which was done under the Affordable Care Act. We need to ensure all women have access to affordable and comprehensive healthcare, including funding more rural and low-income providers, and increasing the number of gynecological oncologists educated in this country (as there are remarkably few nationwide).
I believe that women should have full access to necessary services, contraception coverage, and health care.
I firmly believe in a women’s right to choose and we must make sure that women are empowered to make their own health care decisions and have access to the resources they need.
As a civil rights and employment attorney, I have handled Equal Pay Act cases. The principle of Equal Pay for Equal Work has been the law throughout my entire career as an attorney. The problem is that Courts often erect obstacles to these type of cases, as they do in all areas of civil rights and employment law. The Assembly has passed laws making it easier for plaintiffs’ to prove that the right to Equal Pay has been violated.
“Do we need more female CEOs? Absolutely. Do we need to shatter a plethora of glass ceilings that currently exist? Definitely. This is a complex problem that starts very early. Even though it is 2016, some women are still taught that certain jobs are for them and certain jobs are not. This is unacceptable. We need to shift our mindset as a society.
Equal pay initiatives have good intentions, but are an oversimplification of a complicated problem:
“By focusing our outrage into a tidy, misleading statistic we’ve missed the actual challenges. It would in fact be much simpler if the problem were rank sexism and all you had to do was enlighten the nation’s bosses or throw the Equal Pay Act at them. But the 91 percent statistic suggests a much more complicated set of problems. Is it that women are choosing lower-paying professions or that our country values women’s professions less? And why do women work fewer hours? Is this all discrimination or, as economist Claudia Goldin likes to say, also a result of “rational choices” women make about how they want to conduct their lives.” – Hanna Rosin
I would support any legislation that eliminates obstacles to women being employed in any field they see fit. I will be a strong advocate for freedom and full equality of opportunity.
Recently New York State enacted numerous laws to protect and further women’s equality in New York State. These new laws will help achieve pay equity, strengthen human trafficking laws and protections for domestic violence victims and end pregnancy discrimination in all workplaces. During my almost 20 years in the Senate we have seen great progress in the number of elected officials who are women. We are a better government for it and I hope we continue to see more women inspired to run for elected office.
Equal pay for equal work regardless of sex/gender identification, race, sexual orientation, age or disabilities. The most qualified candidate should earn the position, and the positions should pay the same regardless of who gets the job.
Equal pay is an important issue for women and I am not only a strong advocate but also a prime co-sponsor of several bills on this measure.
