The Mohonasen boys basketball team shook off a slow start to surge past Colonie 61-44 in Tuesday night’s Suburban Council South Division game.
Trailing 12-7 at one point late in the first quarter, the Mighty Warriors (6-2 league, 7-3 overall) went on a 16-3 run to build an eight-point advantage in the second quarter. The Garnet Raiders (1-7, 2-8) rallied to within three points early in the third quarter before Mohonasen pulled away for good with a 15-0 spurt.
I think we’ve had enough games where we’ve given up leads, said Mohonasen coach Ken Dagostino, whose team was coming off a close loss to Niskayuna last Friday. `It was nice to see us respond the way we did.`
`Seventy-five percent of the time tonight, we were competing,` said Colonie coach Doug Kilmer. `But there were times where we didn’t have that energy. It happens when you have a young team like we do.`
Garrett Sisson was Mohonasen’s primary weapon. The senior forward scored a season-high 22 points and pulled down several rebounds to lead the Mighty Warriors’ surge.
`Sisson played a nice game for us,` said Dagostino. `He hit a couple of outside shots, and he did a good job of putting back other people’s misses.`
Colonie received 11 points from Zeian Polanco and 10 points from Andrew Hooten, but the Garnet Raiders couldn’t keep up with Mohonasen once their three-point shots stopped falling after the first quarter.
`We lacked toughness [in the low post],` said Kilmer. `Mohonasen had toughness because they’re older and more experienced. We’re just not a big, tough team in the paint.`
Mohonasen hosts Columbia Friday night, while Colonie travels to Averill Park.
