Around 1,600 Bethlehem property owners will be receiving amended tax bills in the mail after a clerical error resulted in a miscalculation of taxes for the North Bethlehem and Slingerlands fire districts.
Supervisor Sam Messina said the mistake caused bills to be off by as much as $300 or $400. Residents should be receiving the new, lower bills soon, if they haven’t already.
`A clerical error was made here, and we discovered it and have been talking with the county about that,` Messina said. `My conversations with the county indicate that it happens fairly regularly.`
He added the town will have extra sets of eyes reviewing the bills to make sure figures are correct. Taxes are due by Jan. 31. “
