BETHLEHEM — Bethlehem Central High School students Wenyuan Hou, Alfonzo Prieto, Jimmy Cody, Mike Bartlett, Mike Connolly and Boyang Zhou competed in the Capital Regional Championship of Masterminds held at Siena College on Thursday, May 25, coming from the loser’s bracket to win five games in a row and beating teams from Troy and Columbia High Schools for the championship title.
Wenyuan Hou was named the all-tournament MVP and Mike Bartlett was also named to the all-tournament team.
The Capital Region consists of more than 30 high schools that compete in five leagues. The championship means BCHS’s Masterminds team will represent the Capital Region at the New York State Masterminds Championship on Saturday, June 10, at Lemoyne College in Syracuse. This year, more than 120 high schools competed in Masterminds across New York State. Champions from the four regions — Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and Albany — will compete in Syracuse for the New York State Masterminds Championship. Bethlehem has won the state championship the last four years so this year would be a five-peat. It would be BCHS’s seventh New York State Championship since 2006.
