Dear Editor:
As residents of the Town of Bethlehem, I think we all like to believe that our Town is a sleepy, quaint and quiet community with little crime. Unfortunately, this is not exactly the case. If one has doubts, just read the “Police, fire and emergency calls” in the March 13-March 19 local Spotlight newspaper.
Our local police officers here in Bethlehem earn every nickel they make and are absolutely vital to the well-being of our community. ·I also applaud our local Spotlight newspaper for printing these articles so that our townspeople have at least a modicum of awareness of what these officers deal with on a daily basis.
They deal with countless larcenies, DWI’s, arrest warrants, repeat offenders, dangerous high-speed chases and pursuits, car jackings, bank robberies, you name it! Their jobs are often dangerous but many of us take their service for granted as we obliviously go about our own busy lives on a daily basis. I grew up in Slingerlands from the age oftwo and have remained in this Town ever since, attending our excellent schools from Slingerlands Elementary to Bethlehem Central High School and beyond. Accordingly, I am grateful for our professional police department, our knowledgeable justice court employees, and our exemplary town judges who make rational and intelligent decisions. None of these jobs are easy.
I am also grateful for our dedicated EMT’s, our ambulance services, and our firefighters who all contribute significantly to the health, safety, and well-being of this community.
Just keep reading the “Police, fire and emergency calls” in the weekly Spotlight and one will get a glimpse of just how much our police and our local government employees and volunteers contribute to the comfort, safety and security of our community. Our lives are enriched by their efforts and we should acknowledge their contribution.
