DELMAR – On Saturday, Aug 20 at approximately 2:24 a.m., Bethlehem Police observed a Mazda Miata traveling east on Delaware Ave with an inadequate headlamp in violation of the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law. The officer attempted to stop the vehicle but the operator of the vehicle fled in a reckless manner at a high rate of speed into the City of Albany.
The officer continued to follow the vehicle with emergency lights and siren activated through several side streets and parking lots within the City of Albany. The operator of the Mazda continued to flee and at one point did recklessly spin his vehicle around almost striking the front end of the Bethlehem Police car. The suspect continued to flee and the suspect was not apprehended that morning.
On Wednesday, Aug 31, Bethlehem Police, assisted by the Albany County Sheriff’s Department, arrested Gino L. Cubello , 20 of New Scotland, in connection with the case after an investigation. It also showed the Mazda that Cubello was driving during the incident had license plates that were stolen from a Delmar residence.
He was charged with reckless endangerment, unlawful fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle and criminal possession of stolen property, all misdemeanors, as well as numerous vehicle and traffic law violations.
Cubello was released on an appearance ticket to return to Bethlehem Town Court on Wednesday, Sept. 20 to answer the charges.
