One week after suffering a 17-point home loss against Guilderland, the Bethlehem boys basketball team turned the tables on Mohonasen and beat the Mighty Warriors 63-44 Friday, Jan. 30, in Rotterdam. Playing their second game without John Sica, who was out with an injury, the Eagles (10-3 league, 12-3 overall) struggled to get into a good offensive flow against Mohonasen’s tight defense. That changed in the fourth quarter, though, as Bethlehem outscored the Mighty Warriors (5-8, 6-10) 29-12 to break the game open. Four Bethlehem players reached double figures in the scoring column. Zane Thompson led the way with 16 points, while Kevin Weber contributed 14 points and Liam Dole added 13 points. John Riker netted 10 points. Steven Clements had 11 points for Mohonasen, which sunk only three three-pointers in the game. The Mighty Warriors entered the game averaging nearly six threes per game. Bethlehem hosted Averill Park Tuesday, Feb. 3, in another Suburban Council South Division game. The Eagles travel to Columbia Friday, Feb. 6, before closing out the league season Feb. 10 against Colonie. The Bethlehem girls basketball team had no trouble with Mohonasen, as the Lady Eagles cruised to a 76-27 home victory Friday, Jan. 30. Bethlehem’s offense kicked into high gear in the second quarter, as the Lady Eagles (12-1, 13-2) outscored the Mighty Warriors 30-6 to build a commanding 30-point halftime lead. Mohonasen (2-11, 3-12) showed a little life in the third quarter, as it scored 12 of its 27 points, but Bethlehem closed the game on a 20-5 run. Gabby Giacone had 27 points to pace Bethlehem. Maggie Kirby chipped in with 16 points, and Emily Wander added 12 points. Saeeda Abdul-Aziz’s 15 points led Mohonasen. Bethlehem traveled to Averill Park Tuesday, Feb. 3. The Lady Eagles’ next home game is Friday, Feb. 6, against Columbia. Bethlehem earned its third consecutive Capital District High School Hockey League victory with a 5-1 win against Queensbury Friday, Jan. 30, at the Bethlehem Area YMCA. Nicholas Breiner scored two goals and assisted on another to lead the Eagles (6-4-0, 7-8-0). Ned Englebride, Kellen Hagen and Hayes Meredith also tallied, and goaltender Carl Cusack made 21 saves. Bethlehem avenged an earlier loss to LaSalle with a 4-1 victory over the Cadets Wednesday, Jan. 28, at Hudson Valley Community College. Tyler Hull had two goals, and Englebride contributed a goal and an assist for the Eagles, who lost to LaSalle 2-1 two weeks earlier. Cusack stopped 14 of the 15 shots he faced. Bethlehem was scheduled to travel to Glens Falls/South Glens Falls/Hudson Falls Monday, Feb. 2, for a CDHSHL game. The Eagles’ next home game is Friday, Feb. 6, against Niskayuna/Schenectady.Girls basketball
