The longest losing streak in Section 2 hockey ended Friday, Jan. 23.
Troy Bennett’s second goal of the evening helped Guilderland/Mohonasen/Scotia-Glenville defeat Shaker/Colonie 3-2 in overtime at the Schenectady County Recreational Facility.
G/M/S (1-7-0) had been on a 58-game losing streak dating back to the 2011-12 season, when it was known as Guilderland/Mohonasen. A lot of that had to do with a shortage of players, as the Storm had barely more than the 10-player minimum needed to compete.
Things changed this year for G/M/S. An influx of young players from Guilderland and Mohonasen expanded the roster to 21 players, and the team decided to play a shorter, independent schedule, avoiding match-ups against Section 2 powers such as Shenendehowa and Saratoga Springs.
Everything came together for the Storm against Shaker/Colonie (2-10-2). Freshman goaltender Daniel Cooper made 36 saves to keep G/M/S in the game until Bennett – one of five seniors on the team – won it in overtime with his third goal of the season.
The Storm couldn’t keep the momentum going the following night, as they lost to Burnt Hills/Ballston Spa 12-3 Saturday, Jan. 24. BH/BS (12-2-0) scored five goals in the first period, and it never looked back.
Brandon Gaudin and Aaron Thorpe each had three goals and two assists for BH/BS. Tyler Popp tallied twice for G/M/S.
The Storm have four games left in their season, all of which are against out-of-region teams. They host Section 6’s Kenmore East Saturday, Jan. 31, at Union College.
