The Shaker boys soccerr team won the Suburban Council North Division championship by edging Shenendehowa 1-0 in its final regular season game Thursday, Oct. 16, in Clifton Park.
Justin Brehm — who scored the winning goal in Shaker’s 1-0 home victory over Shen earlier in the season — came through in the rematch. Brehm knocked in Greg Milnarik’s header 10 minutes into the opening half to give the Blue Bison a one-goal advantage.
Shaker (14-1-1, 20.5 points) continued to apply pressure to Shen’s defense the rest of the first half, but it couldn’t find the back of the net again. The Plains-men (12-3-1, 18.5 points) controlled the flow of play in the second half, generating nine corner kicks and several free kicks. Shaker defenders Patrick Mahoney and David Riccio headed away several Shen scoring chances, though, to keep the Blue Bison in front.
The victory gave Shaker only its third overall Suburban Council title in the program’s history and the No. 1 seed for the Section 2 Class AA playoffs. The Blue Bison received their first playoff matchup at the Sectional seeding meeting Tuesday, Oct. 21.
