It was another strong track meet for Shaker’s pole vaulters.
James Steck, Casey Ogden and Dan Gavin swept the top three places to help the Blue Bison run away with the team title at Friday’s Suburban Council Track and Field Championships at Shenendehowa High School.
Steck led the way by clearing the bar at 14 feet, 6 inches for first place. Gavin was second after he cleared 14 feet, and Ogden placed third with a cleared height of 13 feet, 6 inches.
Shaker’s sprinters also turned in solid performances. Kenny Jackson and Austin Drescher took the top two places in the 200-meter dash finals, with Jackson edging Drescher by .02 seconds for first place. Jackson finished with a time of 23.11 seconds.
Shaker’s Ian Weykamp added a victory in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles. Weykamp surged past Saratoga’s Zack Grandy in the final 50 meters to take first place with a time of 55.20 seconds.
Other winners for the Blue Bison were Adam Schwenzfeier in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and Ryan Griffin in the shot put. Schwenzfeier finished with a time of 10:00.58 to earn the steeplechase title, while Griffin had a winning throw of 50 feet, 11.5 inches.
Shaker finished the day with 158 points for the team title, 72 points ahead of runner-up Shen. Colonie was eighth with 20 points, half of which came when the 3,200-meter relay team of Zach Bell, Jon Holmes, Jordan Johnson and Jake Johnson won with a time of 7:53.17.
