Once Trey Herlitz-Ferguson got on track, there was nothing Christian Brothers Academy could do to stop him.
The senior forward recorded a hat trick to lead Mamaroneck to a 7-5 victory over the Brothers in the finals of the Shaker/Colonie Thanksgiving Hockey Tournament Saturday at the Albany County Hockey Facility.
Herlitz-Ferguson scored twice in a 34-second stretch of the first period to give the Tigers (2-0-0) a 2-1 lead, and he added his third goal midway through the second period to put Mamaroneck ahead 4-2.
“We didn’t have an answer for him all (day),” said CBA coach Blaine Drescher. “He really made us chase him in our defensive zone.”
CBA (0-1-1) did its best to stay with Mamaroneck in the goal scoring department. Five different players tallied for the Brothers.
“That’s one positive I took from this weekend,” said Drescher. “It was really good knowing we could put up nine goals in two games.”
Grant Stockman got CBA on the scoreboard first when he blasted a long shot into the upper right corner of the goal 2:30 into the first period. The 1-0 lead held until Herlitz-Ferguson scored the first of his two goals with 3:54 left in the frame. Mamaroneck added two goals before the period expired to build a 3-1 advantage.
John Basset scored off a feed from Zach Swanteck with 9:44 left in the second period to help CBA close the gap to 3-2 before Mamaroneck struck for two more goals to extend its advantage to 5-2. The Brothers pulled within two goals three times in the third period, but that was as close as they got.
Ted Bellis contributed three goals for Mamaroneck, while Swanteck, Chase Crawford and Nick Mackarowsky scored goals for CBA.
The Brothers begin their Capital District High School Hockey League season Wednesday when they play LaSalle at Hudson Valley Community College.
