The Shaker boys soccer team gave new coach Dan Fountain his first win at the varsity level.
Four different players scored goals to lift the Blue Bison past Ballston Spa 4-1 in Tuesday’s Suburban Council season opener in Latham.
`The boys are very excited about it,` said Fountain. `But we can’t get too excited about it. We still have a long way to go this season.`
Joe Klinowski, Caleb Mellon, Tubo Akangbou and Ryan Casserly scored goals for Shaker. Akangbou, Casserly and Danny Brant also had assists.
`That’s how we’re going to be this year,` said Fountain. `We’re going to have several different players contributing to our offense, instead of one or two players scoring all of the goals.`
Shaker enters this season having one of the most veteran-laden rosters in the Suburban Council North Division. Twelve players are back from last year’s team.
`We’re going to be relying on experience a lot this year,` said Fountain.
In other Suburban Council boys soccer action Tuesday, new Shenendehowa coach Jonathan Bain recorded his first career victory as the Plainsmen defeated Niskayuna 3-1 on the road.
Chris Schmid scored two minutes into the game, and Mark Rakowsky added a pair of second-half goals for Shen. Bobby Chapman tallied for Niskayuna in its home opener.
Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake edged Saratoga Springs 1-0 in its season opener Tuesday. Wyatt Sawyer knocked in a rebound off Tim Hughes’ free kick one minute into the second half to put the Spartans in front.
