Editor, The Spotlight;
I am saddened by the loss of Mrs. Rose Goldberg, a past member of the Elsmere Elementary School community.
Upon hearing of her passing, I wanted to share and reflect on the memories past members of the Elsmere School hold regarding a remarkable and beloved individual we encountered there. I was indeed fortunate to share that space in my life with her.
Mrs. Goldberg came to the Elsmere Elmementary School Library as a volunteer, and remained a constant there for over ten years during the 1980’s and 90’s. She was a senior citizen who brightened our neighborhood and schools with her glorious smile, greeting everyone with an extraordinarily youthful voice and perpetually upbeat attitude. She quickly learned the use of our computer circulation system without hesitation, and intuitively knew the importance of re-shelving student and teacher resources.
There is a lot to be recommended about the presence of an older volunteer working with children. Her gentle demeanor and kindness radiated for even the shyest or most reluctant child. Mrs. Goldberg;s willingness to learn demonstrated an immediate and steady example. These valuable lessons are a lasting gift to all the Elsmere faculty and students of that time.
I hope sharing my memories has enabled you to recall your own of Mrs. Goldberg as well.
