Ten years ago, Amanda Scalzo created a different type of hair salon in Voorheesville.
Purity Hair Design uses environmentally-safe products and recycles most of its waste to produce a low carbon footprint. The salon on South Main Street in the heart of the Albany County village is a certified member of Green Circle Salons.
“What’s great about this salon is we carry Aveda products,” said Scalzo. “Their products are 98 percent naturally derived. They don’t test on animals. Everything is made in the USA.”
Scalzo said besides being environmentally conscious, Aveda creates products that deliver results. For example, their line of hair color products provide good overall coverage.
Continuity is another key aspect of Purity Hair Design. The staff of five stylists have been together for several years, which bucks the industry trend of high turnover rates.
“I have a really great team, and they’ve been with me for a really long time,” said Scalzo. “I think the least amount of time has been three years, and some of them have been with me for eight years.”
Scalzo and her staff strive to create an environment within the store that is professional and welcoming to their customers.
“We wanted the salon to be nice and very comfortable,” said Scalzo. “We have a 99 percent customer retention rate.”
