ALBANY — Grassroot Givers’ annual volunteer-community service event, called “A Day of Simple Giving,” will be held at St. Sophia’s Church, 440 Whitehall Road, in Albany on Saturday, Nov. 5 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Approximately 350 volunteers from local businesses and community organizations as well as students, families, and interested individuals will create and assemble $26,000 worth of everyday practical items, including household goods, handmade winter scarves, socks, toiletries and other personal care items, books, layered bean soup mix, decorated cookies, and more to be donated to those in need. Beneficiaries include Equinox, Books for Troops, Interfaith Partnership for the Homeless, Albany Boys and Girls Club, veterans organizations, South End Children’s Café, and many more. This is Grasssroot Givers’ major yearly fundraiser, and sponsors are needed to fund the organization’s many outreach programs. To be a sponsor or to register to volunteer, call 542-1276 or contact Grassroot Givers at [email protected].
In 2012, Mary Partridge-Brown and Roberta Sandler, whose motto is “Giving With Dignity” took over a closed YMCA in downtown Albany and filled the enormous empty swimming pool with thousands of donated books in excellent condition. To date, nearly 100,000 books have been given away, with the help of a small army of volunteers, to individuals and community groups that badly need them. The space is also used to house a free community store, stocked with new or nearly new clothing and household items. 600 people per month utilize the store to obtain basic necessities.
