Dust Bunny’s Boutique was founded in 2007 by Abby Serfilippi, her mother, Mary Jane, and her sister, Jessie after Abby participated in a fourth grade fundraiser for a local animal shelter while attending St. Thomas the Apostle School. Inspired to keep fighting for animals, she began making homemade crafts and selling them at local craft fairs, with the money she raised going to two animal shelters. In her first year she made $100 by participating in one craft fair. Last year, thanks to a multitude of local businesses who have kindly agreed to host her display, she raised over $6,000, donating 100% of the proceeds.
The money made from craft sales is donated to eight local rescues and sanctuaries, including Mohawk Hudson Humane Society, Animal Protective Foundation in Scotia, Woodstock Farm Sanctuary, Catskill Animal Sanctuary, Farm Animal Sanctuary, Red Robin Song Animal Sanctuary, Indraloka Animal Sanctuary, and local wildlife rehabbers.
This past year Abby received national recognition for her efforts at the annual Farm Animal Rights Movement Conference in Alexandria, VA. She was presented with the Lisa Shapiro Youth Activist Award for her commitment to creating a better world for animals through the making and selling of her crafts.
The crafts for sale range from the popular Button Buddies and Buddies in a Basket to holiday themed crafts, such as Chicks in a Basket for the Easter season. The crafts can be bought year-round at The Perfect Blend, Shampoodle, The Brakes, Healthy on Lark, and Nails by Nicole. They can be bought seasonally at Gade Farm, Our Family’s Harvest, Keybank in Delmar, Kleinke’s Farm, Honest Weight Food Co-op, The Little Bookhouse, and The Village Animal Clinic.
