The New York State Police Troop T has written 44 citations in the month of January for the new Move Over Act, which was enacted at the beginning of this year, according to Sergent James Trotta.
Trotta said when an emergency vehicle is on the side of the road with its lights on, a car must move over to the nearest lane to the left safely and without violating any traffic laws.
The law was created after New York State Trooper Robert W. Ambrose and Onondaga County Sheriff Deputy Glenn M. Searles were both killed by passing traffic while performing their duties.

on Jan. 2, there have been more than 160 law officers nationwide that have been killed in the line of duty after being hit by a passing vehicle since 1999, according to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.
The law was met with high praise by local emergency agencies such as area EMTs, firefighters and police officers.
The fine for the law can be up to $275 and two points on their license.
