Around 11:15 p.m. on Election night, Scott Murphy (D-Glens Falls) conceded, being bumped out of the 20th Congressional District by newcomer Chris Gibson (R/C-Kinderhook). Joined by his wife, three children and supporters, Gibson thanked a packed ballroom at the Holiday Inn in Saratoga Springs, pausing several times to wait for chanting and applause to pass.
I want to express my gratitude and love to my family; to Mary Jo, who’s been there every step of the way I would not be here today without their love and support, said Gibson.
Unofficial results showed Gibson leading Murphy 109,444 to 87,699, with 92 percent of districts reporting.
`It’s going to be the responsibility of the new Congress to recognize the fact that the federal government isn’t going to create jobs in the private sector; our responsibility to alter this environment. This environment right now is hostile and uncertain to growth and it needs to change. We need to listen to our small business owners and employees; they tell us what we need to be doing,` said Gibson. `We need to protect our freedom from threats abroad and bring a successful and rapid conclusion to the operations in Iraq and Afghanistan and need to better organize to defeat this threat, al Qaeda.`
Gibson has said throughout his campaign that he will keep New Yorkers from fleeing the state by promoting job growth within New York State, by fighting on the House floor for policies to encourage businesses to begin hiring through lowering taxes and doing away with `onerous regulations.` He said he will fight to lower taxes, decrease government spending and bureaucracy and repeal and replace the healthcare bill.
`This is going to be an exciting time, this next Congress, the next two years; when you look out and know construction at GlobalFoundries will be completed and bring on the first manufacturing jobs. We’re going to work hard for farmers; we’ve got the hardest working farmers and we’ve got to get ready for the farm bill of 2012. We need better price discovery, to get onerous regulations off their backs and ensure a level playing field,` said Gibson. `We need to do a better job of planning and budgeting. This year, as you know, we have no budget and without a budget there’s no plan for job creation and for fiscal responsibility. In a budget we take into account our infrastructure needs too, because clearly we need to rebuild America, but that also includes our infrastructure. A key part of our future is going to be energy; energy that drives our economy, so we’ve got to balance our energy needs, the environment and the economy and we will do that.`
