A fire started in an outside dumpster at 2699 Broadway in Rotterdam consumed the woodcraft shop of Alden Floor Service on Friday, May 21.
The fire, which began in an outside dumpster, fully involved the woodcraft shop with firemen from Rotterdam Fire District Number Six responding to the blaze. After the fire moved quickly from the dumpster to the roof of the back building, causing the roof to collapse. According to Rotterdam Fire District Six Fire Chief Mike France the fire began around 2:30 p.m. and spread quickly to other parts of the building. At this time, there is no speculation to what caused the original dumpster fire or suspicion of foul-play. No injuries have been reported and crews that were inside the building got out unharmed before the roof on the back building collapsed, according to France. Support came from five additional companies including the City of Schenectady, Rotterdam Fire District 2 and Districts Three and Five.
