Colonie’s Kyle Plante continues to put her name in the Section II track and field record books.
The sophomore set a new Section II record in the girls 400-meter intermediate hurdles and tacked on a meet record in the 200-meter dash at Saturday’s Eddy Meet at Union College.
Seeded first in the fast heat of the 400 hurdles, Plante lived up to her billing by pulling away from the field and winning the race in a time of 59.95 seconds, one-half second faster than the previous mark set in 1983 by Mont Pleasant’s Rhonda Phillips. The next-fastest runner Utica Proctor’s Kierra Arthur finished with a time of 1:03.31.
Plante didn’t stop there. She set a meet record in the 200 dash with a preliminary time of 24.25 seconds, and she ran a time of 24.66 seconds in the finals to claim the title over Rome Free Academy’s Jessica Razy (25.46 seconds).
Plante’s performances in the 200 dash and the 400 hurdles earned her the most outstanding female athlete award at the Eddy Meet ` Section II’s biggest high school invitational. She also helped Colonie tie Queensbury for ninth place in the girls team standings with 22 points.
Shaker’s boys team had a strong showing at the Eddy Meet. The Blue Bison placed fifth out of 38 teams with 39 points, three points behind fourth-place Westbury.
Shaker’s lone victory came in the 3,200-meter relay. The team of Christian Delago, Kyle Foster, Dylan Hedderman and Ryan Recchia defeated runner-up Cooperstown by five seconds to take first place with a time of 8:04.
Senior Naquan Lewis contributed a second-place finish in the shot put for Shaker. Lewis’ best throw was 50 feet, 9.5 inches. Fonda-Fultonville’s Shane Smith won with a toss of 58 feet, 7 inches.
Brendan Dolan placed second in the boys 400 hurdles with a time of 55.27 seconds for the Blue Bison, .23 seconds behind Bay Shore’s Kadesh Roberts.
Colonie tied Mount Anthony for 17th place in the boys team standings with 10 points, but those 10 points came from Giancarlo Sainato’s victory in the 800. Sainato finished with a time of 1:55.14, nearly three-tenths of a second ahead of Gloversville’s Patrick Peterson (1:55.41). Shaker’s Chris Herman was third with a time of 1:55.68.
