The Bethlehem softball team remained tied with Columbia for first place in the Suburban Council South Division following lastt Thursday’s 3-0 victory over Colonie.
The Lady Eagles (11-3 league, 15-3 overall) scored twice in the bottom of the second inning and added an insurance run in the third inning to give pitcher Toni Edwards all the sup-port she needed to pick up the victory. Edwards allowed three hits and struck out 10.
Colonie (6-8) had a chance to get on the scoreboard in the top of the seventh inning, but Bethlehem catcher Samantha Smaldone tagged the runner out at home plate to end the game.
Edwards and outfielder Shelbie Ballard each drove in runs for the Lady Eagles. Ballard accounted for half of her team’s hits with a double and a single.
Columbia (11-3, 15-3) kept pace with Bethlehem by defeating Guilderland 7-0 last Thursday in East Greenbush.
Columbia played Bethlehem Monday to determine first place in the South Division.`
