Three Saratoga Springs students who said they forgot there was a BB gun in the trunk of their car were arrested and charged with possession of a weapon on school grounds at about 2:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 10, at the West Avenue entrance to the high school, according to information from the school district.
Two males and one female, who aren’t being identified by the school district, were arrested without incident and posed no danger to students, staff or visitors, said Principal Frank Crowley. The students are suspended, pending a superintendant’s hearing.
At about 2 p.m., a Geyser Crest resident reportedly called police to report that a young man was seen placing a rifle in the trunk of his car and drove away with two passengers. Police alerted school resource officer John Kelly, who stationed himself at the West Avenue entrance to the high school campus, while campus security officers manned other campus entrances. Upon apprehension, the students indicated they’d forgotten about the weapon in the trunk and had no intention of using it to harm anyone, according to information from the district.
This incident underscores the importance of having a school resource officer in our schools. While at no point was there any threat to our students or staff, we were able to see the coordination with the Saratoga Springs Police Department to ensure everyone’s safety, said Superintendant Dr. Janice White.
