After losing its first two games of the season, the Ballston Spa boys basketball team has hit its stride.
The Scotties (2-2) reached the .500 mark with a 53-48 victory over Mohonasen in last Friday’s Suburban Council game in Rotterdam.
Mohonasen led 29-18 at halftime before Ballston Spa got in gear. The Scotties outscored the Mighty Warriors 35-19 over the final 16 minutes to pull out the win.
Jon Hammond led Ballston Spa with 20 points. Ryan McVeigh contributed 12 points, and Mark Seager added 10 points. Garrett Sisson’s 21 points paced Mohonasen.
Ballston Spa traveled to Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake Tuesday in the final Suburban Council game before the holiday break. The Scotties will make the trip down Route 50 again next week to play in BH-BL’s holiday tournament.
The Spartans (1-2) were looking to reach the .500 mark in the Suburban Council when they hosted the Scotties Tuesday. BH-BL lost to Columbia 70-54 in its most recent game last Friday in East Greenbush.
Nick Keefe and Corey Gibson each scored 18 points to lead Columbia, which used a 23-10 second quarter to take command. Zachary Morton’s 20 points paced BH-BL.
In other Suburban Council action last weekend, Shenendehowa eased past Averill Park 79-46, while Saratoga Springs edged Bethlehem 63-60 in Delmar.
Shen (4-0 league, 5-0 overall) raced out to a 46-21 halftime lead, and it never looked back in maintaining its perfect record.
Matt Miner led the Plainsmen with 16 points. Jose Reyes and Manny Hernandez each chipped in 14 points, and Dan Lee added 11 points.
Saratoga (3-1, 4-2) stumbled out of the gate against Bethlehem, but recovered nicely to pick up its third league win. The Eagles grabbed a 20-6 lead in the first quarter before the Blue Streaks turned things around with a 21-9 second quarter and a 15-10 third quarter.
Zach Arpey had 12 points, Ryan Greco and Mike MacElroy each netted 11 points and Anthony Luciano added 10 points for Saratoga. Ryan Stempsey scored 17 points for Bethlehem (0-5, 0-7).
In the Western Athletic Conference, Saratoga Central Catholic (1-3) couldn’t overcome an 18-point deficit in a 55-50 loss to Mayfield last Friday. The Saints outscored Mayfield 22-9 in the fourth quarter to close the gap.
Dan Keehn and Cody Stevens scored 14 points apiece for Saratoga Catholic. D.J. Hoagboon had 17 points for Mayfield.`
