After posting a 1-9 record at the Linda Stuart Memorial Tournament in Colonie the previous weekend, the Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk wrestling team was happy to be back to grappling with Colonial Council competition.
The Indians recorded several pins on their way to a 64-20 victory over Voorheesville last Thursday.
The kids went out and did what they needed to do, said R-C-S coach Henry Mormile. `The kids wrestled well, so I was pretty pleased with that.`
Voorheesville’s cause wasn’t helped by the fact that it gave up six bouts on forfeits, but the Blackbirds who wrestled battled their opposition hard.
`With six forfeits, it’s tough to win like thath,` said Voorheesville coach Matt Robinson. `Three of those forfeits were regular starters, too.`
The best battle came in the 285-pound weight class between R-C-S’s Alex Soutere and Voor-heesville’s Wes Harrigan. Harri-gan led 8-4 in the third period when Soutere caught him for a two-point takedown that led to a pin.
`It was a great battle back,` said Mormile. `Both kids were really tired at that point, so they need to get back into the training room. But that was a great match.`
`It’s tough to swallow those [types of losses], but he’s only a sophomore,` said Robinson of Harrigan.
The bout that had the most potential for excitement was the 130-pound clash between R-C-S’s Andy Lyman and Voorheesville’s Taylor Treadgold. But Lyman put a stop to that by dominating Treadgold to the tune of a 14-4 victory.
`Taylor is one of our best wrestlers, but Andy is the best wrestler in the section,` said Robinson. `If Taylor wants to win a [Sectional] title, he has to learn how to beat a guy like that.`
`Treadgold came out and gave him a good fight,` said Mormile.
Voorheesville had four individual winners in the match, which only partially pleased Robinson.
`At this point, the goal is to win on the mat, not the scoreboard,` said Robinson. `We didn’t do that tonight, but Ravena is always one of the best teams in the league.`
