An online petition has been started to give residents on the west portion of Guilderland it’s own zip code, as a number of residents addresses list them in Schenectady.
The Web site www.guilderland12303.com states that there is confusion when searching for deliveries, restaurant searches, and business and that many computer systems do not recognize the area code 12303 as being in Guilderland.
It also addresses the post office system.
The Schenectady 12303 Post Office is up to 8 miles away for some, while multiple Post Offices in the town of Guilderland are closer (12084, 12085, 12009)…It would be nice to have the zip code changed for the 12303 part of Guilderland to remedy this problem, even if the mail itself still comes from Schenectady.
`Getting a new Post Office for western Guilderland, or getting service from the Guilderland 12084 Post Office off New Karner Road. (Route 155) expanded will be difficult to achieve. In the mean time, a more achievable solution is to allow the city name Guilderland to be used with the 12303 zip code,` according to the Web site.
The Web site also lists a number of other munipalities that have had success with simialr issues including Colonie, Rotterdam and Scotia.
