The Bethlehem softball season ended with a 4-0 loss to Columbia in last Tuesday’s Section II, Class AA semifinal game.
Tuesday’s game was one of constant dEja vu. Batters for the Eagles would get up to bat and make solid contact that went right to a Columbia defender. Columbia would get two-strike counts and then knock a ball into center field. It became near clockwork for both teams. If most of the Eagles hits had been mere inches to the left or right of where they were hit, the game would have been completely different.
Columbia did most of its damage in the second inning, knocking in three of its four runs.
As the game ended and Bethlehem came off the field, there were tears in the eyes of many players, especially seniors Erika Danz and Amy Halvorsen. Both Danz and Halvorsen showed leadership this year en route to a 20-5 record, one of the best records in school history. Danz was outstanding in right field this season, making several game saving plays including two of the final three outs on her senior night. Halvorsen, who also made an impact in the field, did most of her damage with the bat.
Players such as Mary Dombrowski and Toni Edwards also shone brightly. Dombrowski has one of the best swings in Section II, and her five homeruns lead the team. Edwards mixes her pitches well, making her a top-tier Suburban Council pitcher.
