The Schalmont baseball team’s hopes of winning the Colonial Council title took a serious blow last Friday.
Lansingburgh scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning on its way to a 7-1 victory over Schalmont in a showdown of the league’s top two teams.
The Sabres (9-4 league, 13-6 overall) couldn’t catch up to Jordan Zareski’s pitches. The Saint Rose-bound Zareski limited Schalmont to a season-low two hits and struck out 11 batters in a complete-game performance.
Zareski got offensive support from Frank Castiglione, who had four hits including a triple and a double. Jared Teta tripled and singled, and Ryan McGrath doubled twice for the Knights (11-1, 14-2).
Schalmont rebounded from its loss to Lansingburgh with a 13-2 victory over Cobleskill-Richmondville Monday. The Sabers scored six runs in the top of the second inning, and they never looked back.
Kyle McKelvey, Chris Harrigan and Brian Constantino each drove in two runs for Schalmont. McKelvey had two doubles and two singles, while Harrigan drove in his runs with a triple. Constan-tino added a pair of singles.
Pitcher Joe Amorosi didn’t need much run support beyond the second inning. Amorosi tossed a three-hitter and struck out 11 for Schalmont.
The Sabres hosted Duanesburg Tuesday in a non-league game that was twice delayed by rain earlier this season.
In other baseball action Monday, Niskayuna and Mohonasen suffered Suburban Council losses. Columbia defeated Niskayuna 10-3, while Shenendehowa shut down Mohonasen 10-1.
Shawn Callahan and Nick Valletta each hit home runs for Niskayuna (6-6, 10-6) in its loss to Columbia. Jacob Papa and Robert Tedesco doubled for Mohonasen (3-8, 6-9) against Shenendehowa.`
