The Voorheesville baseball team is officially part of the Section II, Class CC playoffs.
The Blackbirds (4-7 league, 8-9 overall) clinched their playoff berth last Thursday with a 6-1 victory at Cohoes. The win gave Voorheesville enough Sectional points to make the field, even though it’s near the bottom of the Colonial Council standings. Teams earn extra points for beating opponents from larger classes.
Joe Berschwinger had the big hit for Voorheesville with a three-run homer in the top of the third inning. Winning pitcher Nick Duncan added a solo home run in the top of the fifth.
The Blackbirds fell below the .500 mark overall Saturday with an 8-7 loss to league-leading Lansingburgh. Frank Castiglione had the game-winning hit for the Knights (11-1, 14-2) in the top of the seventh, while Landon Church had four hits for Voorheesville.
In other baseball action last weekend, Bethlehem suffered a 9-4 Suburban Council loss to Mohonasen Friday. The Mighty Warriors (3-7, 6-8) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning, with three runs coming home on Don Bianchi’s opposite field homer.
Kyle Niehaus led the Eagles (5-6, 8-6) with two hits.`
