The Christian Brothers Academy boys lacrosse team is still undefeated in the Big 10.
LaSalle rallied twice to cut into the Brothers’ lead, but CBA held on to edge the Cadets 8-6 in last Thursday’s road game and improve its league record to 3-0.
We had a classic CBA-LaSalle rivalry game, said head coach Tom Schwan. `It was close the whole time. We were psyched to get the win over there.`
Greg Medici and Andrew Vivian each recorded hat tricks to help the Brothers (8-1 overall) build a lead. But CBA needed a stellar effort from goaltender Shane Hans to hold on for the win. Hans stopped 17 shots to prevent LaSalle (4-2, 5-4) from getting any closer than two goals.
The Brothers suffered their first loss of the season the following day against Massachusetts power Duxbury 10-5, but Schwan said they played well enough to win.
`We were disappointed because we put ourselves in a position where it could have been a closer game in the end than it was,` said Schwan.
Vivian had two goals and an assist, and Zach Baron added a pair of goals for CBA.
There will be more tests for the Brothers in the coming weeks. Beside dealing with the rest of the Big 10, they have non-league games against four of the Suburban Council’s best teams, starting with Thursday’s meeting with Shenendehowa.
`We’ll get a better idea of what the Suburban Council will be like in the next few weeks,` said Schwan, who also scheduled games against Colonie (May 9), Niskayuna (May 16) and Shaker (May 18).
Good performances against those Suburban Council teams could be a sign of things to come for CBA. The Brothers are looking to become the first Big 10 team to reach the Section II, Class A finals, and with four-time defending champion Niskayuna moving to Class B this year, the door is open.
`Starting with the quarterfinals, it will be very competitive,` said Schwan.“
