The Mohonasen girls basket-ball team is back in the Section II, Class A finals.
The top-seeded Mighty War-riors overcame a slow start to defeat No. 5 Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake 42-30 in Tuesday’s semifinal at Colonie Central High School and advance to Saturday’s final against Suburban Council rival Averill Park at Hudson Valley Community College.
Mohonasen (20-2) struggled to hit shots over the first eight minutes as it fell behind 6-0. But once the Mighty Warriors got on the scoreboard early in the second quarter, there was no stopping them as they outscored BH-BL (4-18) 30-13 over the next two periods to take control.
Sophomore guard Lea McClain scored 18 points to lead Mohon-asen, which is searching for its first Sectional title in seven years. Georgina Farrow led BH-BL with 13 points.
Mohonasen will try to defeat Averill Park for the third time this season. The Mighty Warriors edged the Warriors (15-7) by one point in both regular season meetings.
Mohonasen reached the semifinals with a 49-21 victory over Scotia-Glenville in last Friday’s quarterfinal in Rotterdam. The Mighty Warriors jumped out to a 27-6 lead within the first 11 minutes of the game, and they never looked back.
Senior forward Nicole Adach led a balanced Mohonasen attack with 11 points. Dayna Lashin contributed nine points.`
