With every victory, the Mohonasen girls basketball team is further asserting itself as a favorite to win the Section II, Class A title.
The Mighty Warriors (11-2 league, 15-2 overall) have won 10 games in a row entering Tuesday’s Suburban Council South Division showdown with Colonie. Included in that streak are victories over Bethlehem Jan. 23 (42-40) and North Division leader Shenendehowa Jan. 30 (48-41).
Mohonasen looked equally strong in its most recent win, a 72-38 victory over Ballston Spa last Friday in Rotterdam. The Mighty Warriors outscored the Scotties (2-12, 4-14) 20-11 in the second quarter to build a 36-21 halftime lead, and they never looked back.
Nicole Adach led the way for Mohonasen with 24 points including three three-pointers. Michelle Aviza contributed 17 points, while Dayna Lashin and Lea McClain each added 10 points.
Amanda Callanan and Geena Gallo scored 10 points apiece for Ballston Spa.
Mohonasen was looking to avenge one of its two losses when it met Colonie Tuesday. The Garnet Raiders (7-6, 9-8) defeated the Mighty Warriors 54-43 Jan. 3 the last loss Mohonasen has had.
Following Tuesday’s game in Rotterdam, Mohonasen hits the road for its final two Suburban Council contests. The Mighty Warriors travel to Averill Park Friday and Saratoga Springs next Tuesday.
Colonie entered Tuesday’s game at Mohonasen off a 55-42 Suburban Council victory over Niskayuna. The Garnet Raiders had four players in double figures, led by Amie Jefferson’s 15 points. Tehresa Coles contributed 11 points, while Shayla Madden and Kari Kipper each netted 10 points.
Katherine Cocca and Kiersten Gray both scored 10 points for Niskayuna (8-5, 11-5), which won five of its previous six games.
In other weekend girls basketball action, Scotia-Glenville lost to Glens Falls 47-41, Schenectady Christian suffered a 57-48 setback against Berne-Knox-Westerlo and Lansingburgh defeated Schalmont 50-35.
Scotia-Glenville (4-8, 6-11) fell behind its Foothills Council rivals from Glens Falls 20-9 in the first quarter and never recovered.
Sarah Mason scored 18 points, and Kasey Sullivan added 12 points for Glens Falls (8-6, 11-7). Cassie Broadhead’s 13 points paced Scotia-Glenville.
Andrea VanDyke netted 18 points, and Amber Pitcher chipped in 11 points for Berne-Knox-Westerlo (10-2, 11-5) in its Western Athletic Conference victory over Schenectady Christian. Bethany Goodrich scored 14 points for the Falcons (5-6, 9-7), and Ashlyn Slater added 12 points.
Ariana Youngs netted 17 points to lead Lansingburgh (13-3, 13-5) to its 15-point Colonial Council win against Schalmont (2-14, 3-15). Ashlene Potter led the Sabres with eight points.
Scotia-Glenville and Schalmont have home games Friday. Scotia-Glenville meets South Glens Falls, while Schalmont welcomes Voorheesville to western Rotterdam.`
