In case you did not get the opportunity to drop off your bottles and cans to the Mohawk and Hudson Humane Society during their fundraiser at the Crossings of Colonie on Saturday, Jan. 31, the humane society has another chance to help out.
Executive Director of the Mohawk and Hudson Humane Society Brad Shear is asking for volunteers to come any time during business hours to help sort the thousands of bottles and cans that were collected during the fundraiser. The sorting of the bottles and cans is essential to the fundraising efforts, as Price Chopper has pledged to match the reimbursement rate of each bottle or can, nickel for nickel.
The fundraiser was held nearly a week after a robbery occurred at the Menands facility. During the robbery, which is still under investigation, a shed that held nearly 7,000 bottles and cans was cleaned out.
The humane society collects recyclables and later returns them for 7 cents per unit. The money is then used to pay for supplies and food for the animals housed at the shelter.
According to Shear, the cans and bottles stolen could have brought in nearly $500. The fundraiser, however, yielded 10 times the number of cans that were stolen, Shear said, as well as cash and pet food donations.
To volunteer to help the Mohawk and Hudson Humane Society sort the cans and bottles, contact the humane society at 434-8128. You must be 12 years old or older to participate.“
