The Schalmont boys basketball team won its first Colonial Council game in two years, thanks to a strong defensive effort.
The Sabres limited Mechanicville to 11 points in the second half to pull away for a 53-33 victory last Friday in Mechanicville.
The Red Raiders (3-5 league, 4-9 overall) gained a 13-12 edge on Schalmont in the first quarter before the Sabres defense took control. Schalmont (1-7, 1-12) held Mechanicville to nine points in the second quarter, five points in the third quarter and six points in the fourth quarter.
Meanwhile, Schalmont’s of-fense kicked into high gear. The Sabres scored 13 points in the second quarter to take a 25-22 halftime lead and then put together a 22-point third quarter to break the game open.
Bobby Sheehan played a major role in Schalmont’s offensive explosion. Sheehan netted 19 points through the first three quarters to lead all scorers.
Dan Bonitatibus contributed 10 points for the Sabres, who hadn’t won a game since the 2006-07 season.
In other boys basketball action, Scotia-Glenville ran its Foothills Council record to 5-1 with a 54-44 victory over South Glens Falls.
Terrell Winney scored 18 points, and Jim Janson contributed 15 points for the Tartans (11-1), who remained tied with Glovers-ville for first place in the league standings. Gloversville defeated Queensbury 62-32.`
