The Saratoga Springs boys basketball team received a scare from Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake before pulling out a 50-47 Suburban Council North Division victory Monday.
The Blue Streaks (4-0 league, 7-1 overall) outscored the Spartans (2-2, 3-3) 18-9 in the second quarter to build a 27-20 halftime lead. BH-BL responded by scoring 17 points in the third quarter to cut Saratoga’s lead to one point, but the Blue Streaks limited the Spartans to 10 points in the final eight minutes to remain undefeated in league play.
Alex King scored 20 points, and Jordan Stevens added 11 points for Saratoga, which returned to action Tuesday when it hosted Averill Park.
Zachary Morton had 13 points to lead BH-BL. Conor Maloney contributed 11 points, and Paul Layton added seven points.
In other Suburban Council action Monday, Shenendehowa kept pace with Saratoga in the North Division with a 60-34 victory over Shaker in Latham.
The Plainsmen (3-1, 7-1) jumped out to a 22-11 lead after the first quarter and steadily pulled away from there behind a defense that allowed only 23 points over the final three periods.
Matt Miner scored 17 points, and Matt Lee added 15 points for Shen, which has not lost since suffering a 64-61 loss to Saratoga Dec. 16.
The Plainsmen hosted Columbia Tuesday night with the hope of moving back into a share of first place in the North Division.
In girls basketball action Monday, Shen edged Shaker 43-41 in a Suburban Council North Division game, while Saratoga Central Catholic squeaked past Northville 44-43 in a Western Athletic Conference North Division contest.
Shen (4-0, 6-2) rallied from a 26-21 halftime deficit by outscoring Shaker (3-2, 4-4) 12-4 in the third quarter. The game remained close throughout the fourth quarter before the Plainsmen pulled out the win.
Roslyn Alexander scored 12 points, and Marissa Ray added 10 points for Shen. Katrina Patterson had 13 points for Shaker.
Kate Mensler’s 20 points helped Saratoga Catholic (1-1, 2-5) earn its first WAC win of the season. Chelsea Paul had 20 points for Northville (1-2, 3-2).`
