Tim Hulihan hopes to translate his skills in the math department to his new position as assistant principal at Mohonasen High School, when classes begin Thursday, Sept. 4.
On one hand, it is a different kind of position, Hulihan said. `But obviously I’ll still be working with kids and trying to explore different education initiatives on a larger scale.`
One initiative Hulihan is known for around Mohonasen is his hand in creating the Mohonasen Mathematics Honor Society. The honor society is for juniors and seniors who have at least a 90 percent or above average overall, as well as in math.
Members of the honor society are recognized for their mathe-matical achieve-ments and participate in activities designed to enhance their math abilities.
Hulihan said he will take his ideas for educational experiences with him to his new office.
`Now I get the chance to do that across the spectrum,` Hulihan said of helping to develop educational initiatives.
As assistant principal, Hulihan will chair the Hallway Committee, which looks at school policies and oversees the day-to-day operations of the school. He will also be the point of contact for the high school’s Votec program, which allows students to learn a trade while in high school.
`Mohonasen is always on the cutting edge of new ideas to improve the education of our students,` Hulihan said.
Hulihan taught advanced placement calculus, pre-calculus and advanced algebra for six years at Mohonasen High School. He also served as the dean of the high school for the past two years.
Prior to working at Mohonasen, Hulihan was a math teacher at Niskayuna High School for two years and a teacher intern at Albany High School.
Hulihan is also recognized for his involvement in local and state conferences
where he has spoken about math-related content.
In 2007, Hulihan served as co-president of the Hudson-Mohawk Mathematics Conference, held at Mohonasen High School.
`I’m incredibly excited about this opportunity,` Hulihan said.
He said he is looking forward to working with the faculty, staff and administrators at the high school.
Hulihan holds an administrative degree from the College of Saint Rose and a master’s degree in teaching from Union Graduate School. He also received his bachelor’s degree from Union College where he studied math and psychology.
Hulihan filled a vacancy left by the promotion of David Collins to high school principal.
Collins replaced Patrick McGrath, who took a position with the district as assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction.
