Zoning Board of Appeals member Matthew Veitch has announced his candidacy for Saratoga County Supervisor.
The Republican is seeking to move into one of the seats now occupied by Democrat Saratoga Springs Supervisors Joanne Yepsen and Cheryl Keyrouze.
Saratoga Springs supervisors have power at the county level exclusively, where the city has two of the 23 seats on the Board of Supervisors.
Veitch has strong ties to the city and a political lineage. He is the son-in-law of Assemblyman Roy McDonald, R,C,I-Wilton, and many of his family members are employed by the city.
I am running for supervisor because I believe I can get things done for Saratoga Springs at the county Board of Supervisors, Veitch said. `I am a native Saratogian, and my family has a long history in Saratoga Springs. I think this city is the best place in the world to live, and we all need to do what we can to keep it that way, and make it even better for the future.`
Veitch would not state his position on the county water system, which both current supervisors opposed, but said he wants to see how the situation plays out.
`I believe that we need to take a fresh look at the city’s role within the county,` said Veitch. `The towns within the county are growing, and we need to continue to make the city the focal point of the county. City and county success go hand-in-hand, and I believe that we should partner with the county when it is mutually beneficial.`
The Geyser Road resident took a much more firm stance on adult-use zoning in Saratoga Springs.
`We don’t want it. That’s the long and the short of it. We don’t want it.`
He said the City Council acted wisely by returning the issue to the Planning Board for further consideration. The area near his home is now the area under consideration for the zoning.
Veitch’s campaign Web site, www.veitchforsupervisor.com, is now online.
