A run at the end of the second quarter was all that the Voorheesville girls basketball team needed to beat Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk.
The Blackbirds scored several consecutive baskets to build a 31-20 halftime lead on their way to a 54-50 victory over the Indians in Friday’s Colonial Council game in Voorheesville.
We just didn’t come out ready to play, and they went on a run at the end of the first half, said R-C-S coach Kiley Shortell. `We played better in the fourth quarter and got it close, but they went 6-for-7 at the free throw line down the stretch. So, give them credit for making their free throws.`
Neither team shot the ball well in the first quarter, but Voorheesville (2-2 league, 2-4 overall) did well enough from the free throw line to build an 11-9 lead. R-C-S (0-4) stayed within striking distance until the final two minutes, when the Blackbirds pulled away.
The Indians chipped away at the deficit throughout the second half and outscored Voorheesville 30-23, but they never got the baskets they needed to pull even.
`I think we can shoot better from the field, but as a team, we haven’t shot the ball well yet,` said Shortell.
Casey Beccera had 18 points, and Courtney Bourque contributed 10 points for Voorheesville. Alivia Richter led R-C-S with 13 points, while Jessica Byerwalters and Ashley White each added nine points.
R-C-S returned to action Monday when it played unbeaten Watervliet, while Voorheesville met Schalmont Tuesday.“
