The Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake wrestling team put on a show for the hometown fans at Saturday’s Lee Van Slyke Memorial Tournament.
The Spartans placed second to Valley Central in the team stand-ings. Valley Central finished with 215 points and five individual champions, while BH-BL finished with 198.5 points and two titlists.
Matt Kaylor and Kyle Vuillaume led the Spartans by winning their respective weight classes. Kaylor swept through the 152-pound division on his way to earning Most Outstanding Wrestler honors in the heavyweight class, including a technical fall over Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk’s Cody Legg in the finals.
Vuillaume pinned Corinth’s Pat Marcel with 33 seconds left in their 130-pound division championship bout to earn his individual title.
Three more Spartans finished second after losing their championship bouts. Valley Central’s Cody Ruggirello pinned Max Miller 47 seconds into their 103-pound division final, while Sara-nac’s Charles Beshaw pinned Paul Martin 45 seconds into their 140-pound division championship bout. Josh Lyle took Valley Central’s Matt Lucas into the third period of their 96-pound division final before Lucas pinned Lyle.
Several BH-BL wrestlers wrestled back to place in the top six of their weight classes. Mike Matrazzo (160) and Spencer Miller (189) finished third, while Brendan McKeown (112) and Ethan Wilson (145) placed fourth after losing in the consolation finals.
John Acors (189) and Paul Skarka (275) took fifth place in their weight classes. Josh Sipe (135) and Craig Skarka (171) finished sixth.
Thirteen teams from eastern New York participated in the Lee Van Slyke Memorial Tournament.
Plainsmen roll at Hudson Falls tourney
The Shenendehowa wrestling team turned in a dominating performance at Saturday’s Hudson Falls Tournament.
Seven Plainsmen won their weight classes to help Shen take the team title with 271.5 points. Hudson Falls was second with 209.5 points, and Saratoga placed third with 170 points.
The Meys brothers and the Popolizios all won individual titles for Shen. Austin Meys claimed the 140-pound division champion-ship with a second-period pin against Hudson Falls’ Nate Cross, while Hunter Meys pinned Salem’s Brad Mattison in 2:39 to earn the 160-pound title.
Luke (96) and T.J. Popolizio (112) won their weight classes, as did Seth Hazelton (103), Steve Martin (119) and Nick Altimari (130).
Chris Bolduc led Saratoga by winning the 135-pound division title. A.J. Rue (96) and Eddie Davis (119) placed second after losing their championship bouts.
At the Tri-Valley Tournament, Ballston Spa finished seventh in the team standings with 124 points. Alex Steciuk led the Scotties with a third-place finish in the 171-pound division.`
