COLONIE — Shaker is the first baseball team to win the Colonie Cup for the second time.

On Saturday, April 23, the Bison beat crosstown rival Colonie 11-4 and then came back and beat Christian Brothers Academy 8-5 in eight innings on a game winning double by Joe Karpierz.

CBA, this year’s host, won The Cup last year, Shaker won in 2019 and Colonie won the inaugural cup in 2018. The battle for The Cup between the town’s three major high schools and, more importantly, bragging rights, was not held in 2020 because of the pandemic.

Colonie and CBA squared off first with The Brothers coming out on top 9-1 with three pitchers giving up just one hit.

Michael O’Shaughnessy went 3 for 3 with three RBIs to lead the Brothers while Ryan Bilka went 3 for 4 with an RBI and three runs scored. Six other Brothers got hits. For Colonie, Tyler Susville got the lone base hit for Colonie.

The three teams are in the midst of a hotly competitive Suburban Council and reserving arms for conference play this week was on the minds of all three coaches.

For The Brothers against Colonie, Owen Goodbridge went five innings giving up a run on no hits while striking out three and walking two. O’Shaughnessy and Connor Brown finished up without allowing a run but gave up a hit.

Vinny Mogavero went 4.2 innings for the Raiders giving up six runs on seven hits while striking out four and walking three. Billy Huff went 2.1 innings, and gave up three runs on five hits.

Shaker beat Colonie in game two by scoring three runs in the fourth, three in the fifth and four in the sixth.

Joe Karpierz went 3 for 4 with four RBIs to lead the Bison while Sam Case went 2 for 4 with four RBIs and Josh Ryan went 2 for 4. On the mound, Colby Haver and Jack Montalto split the duties on the mound giving up four runs on seven hits while striking out nine and walking nine.

For Colonie, Daniel Barbero went 2 for 4 with four RBIs and and Brendan Shea went 2 for 2 with an RBI. Josh Slater, Brendan Shea and Jason Novak gave up 11 runs on seven hits while striking out six and walking 11.

In the finals, The Bison scored three runs in the top of the eighth on a first pitch double by Karpierz to take home The Cup for the second time. The game winner was part of a 3 for 4, three RBI day for Karpierz. Carm Mailoux went 2 for 4 with an RBI and Joe Trombley went 1 for 3 with two RBIs for the Bison.

Tommy Case piched six innings for the Bison, giving up five runs on five hits while striking out one and walking two.

Ben Huckans led the Brothers with a 2 for 3, two RBI performance at the plate while AJ Hicks went 1 for 2 with an RBI. Matt Sgambati, Jackson Lilley, Jimmy LaBombard and James Dixon split the pitching duties for CBA, giving up eight runs on 10 hits while striking out four and walking five.
