LATHAM— For her ninth birthday, fourth grader Abby Taylor decided to give, instead of get.

Abby, who is a student at Blue Creek Elementary School, recently donated more than $300 to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. When Abby was 5, her mother was diagnosed with the disease. As a result, this past year, she approached her parents with the idea of raising money for an important cause.

“It’s a bad disease,” Abby said in a statement about why she chose to focus her efforts on MS. “I really want to help people who have bad days. And I just want to help find a cure.”

Abby, who raised the money with help from friends and relatives, also participated in a 5K in October to raise awareness for the disease, according to the North Colonie School District website. Abby was recognized at the North Colonie Board of Education Meeting on Monday, Nov. 21.
