SLINGERLANDS – Bethlehem police arrested a 66-year old Slingerlands man on Monday, Jan. 29 for aggravated DWI and not having a license after he allegedly almost hit a patrol unit on Route 85. If he is convicted, it will be the sixth time for an intoxicated-driving offense.
According to reports, at approximately 4:23 p.m., two Bethlehem patrol units were traveling in the roundabout at Blessing Road when a car driven by Theodore Eckler crossed into the other lane, almost colliding with one of the police vehicles. Officers performed a traffic stop and spoke to Eckler, who was the sole occupant, and observed that he had heavily slurred speech, bloodshot and glassy eyes and had trouble answering questions. Officers also detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from the car. The driver said he did have a license.
As the officer checked the name and date of birth of Eckler, he attempted to drive away from the traffic stop by pulling into a driveway to turn around. The officer maneuvered behind and partially blocked the car, but Eckler backed around the unit. By that time, a second Bethlehem unit blocked the road and the officer told Eckler to put the car in park and hand over the keys. The officer opened the door and removed the keys from the ignition.
Eckler was given and failed field sobriety tests, tested positive for breath alcohol on a pre-screening device and was taken into custody.
Eckler did not have a valid license and five prior DWI/DWAI convictions, with the last one in 2017.
At the police station, Eckler provided a breath sample that returned a .21 percent BAC.
He was charged with aggravated felony DWI and aggravated unlicensed operation and DWI-previous conviction, all felonies, and two counts of aggravated unlicensed operation, both misdemeanors and ticketed for numerous traffic violations.
He was issued tickets and an appearance ticket for Bethlehem Town Court on February 20 and released to a sober party.
