Safety improvements to begin
This week, the library has begun making improvements to the plaza walkway leading to the parking lot entrance. If the weather cooperates, we will start replacing the bricks on the walkway with asphalt to improve traction and allow better access into and out of the library on winter days. In past years, it has been a challenge to keep the bricks ice free, even when other areas of library property have been treated and cleared. We are pleased to be making this change for the safety of our visitors.
During this project, you may notice some disruption during the brick removal and paving process. At times, the parking lot entrance may not be available. We encourage those who are able to use the entrance facing Delaware Avenue, however, we will have an alternate entrance available through the library garage facing the parking lot. Curbside pickup will also be available.
We’d like to thank all of our library visitors for their patience as we move forward with our walkway improvement project, which is being done in partnership with the Town of Bethlehem. Comments or questions? Give us a call at 518-439-9314 or email us at [email protected].
Be a Friend
The Friends of Bethlehem Public Library recently mailed their annual appeal flyer to every home in the school district. Did you get yours? Be sure to check it out to learn more about what they do and see how you can support the organization.
The Friends are an advocacy and support group dedicated to increasing public awareness of the library, and their generosity has supported many important library programs and services.
They underwrite many of our popular concert series, including
A Little Sunday Music, Evenings on the Green and Thursdays in the Park.
Because of the Friends’ support, the library has been able to expand the Library of Things collection, offering high-power telescopes, tools, karaoke machines, American Girl dolls, digital projectors and so much more.
Our museum pass program is also underwritten by the Friends and allows us to offer free passes to Mass MoCA, Albany Institute of History and Art, the Children’s Museum of Saratoga, Hancock Shaker Village, among many others. Find the complete listing at www.bethlehempubliclibrary.org
The Friends run annual trips to Boston and New York City and hold two book sale fundraisers – in the spring and fall.
Think you’d like to be a Friend too? Memberships start at $20. Business memberships are also available. For more information, visit bethlehempubliclibrary.org/.
Our favorite star
The Sun is special to us. It is the ultimate source of everything that makes life possible on Earth. But the Sun, astronomically speaking, is just a normal, yellow, middle-sized star. Unexceptional in every way. And yet its birth, life and likely death, illustrate the incredible ways in which our universe builds itself. Join Dr. Mindy Townsend, Dudley Astronomer at Siena College, Tuesday, Oct. 17, at 7 p.m. as she discusses our fantastically normal star.
