The weekend.
There is no sweeter phrase for folks working Monday through Friday, but the question begs to be asked: What will you be wearing?
Do you take it casual and comfortable, or do you have fun and amp up your look with color and sequins? I suppose it all relates to where you are going.
A good place to start for weekend wear is in the jeans.
Denim has been an American staple – thank you Levi Straus – and, there are no shortages of choices. From your low end to high end, from size 00 to 28, most stores will have you covered. It is important to invest in jeans you will both live in and love. They will be your best friends and they will serve you well.
A good choice for an afternoon with friends and family is a slim cut jean with a sweater or blouse. You can dress it up with a cardigan or jacket depending on the time of year; but a basic pair of jeans done in a dark wash can transcend all events. My staple weekend outfit is a boot cut jean, black tee and a jacket.
Currently, I love the moto. I will pop on a pair of wedge sneakers or moccasins and I’m set. This look can take you from reading with your kids in the morning at the library, to an afternoon coffee with your girlfriends.
If you’re not a fan of jeans, look to leggings as your bottom. Active wear, or athleisure, is far too popular: you can’t escape yoga pants when you’re at the mall. Nonetheless, leggings or yoga pants can make for versatile bottoms when done so properly, like when paired with a tunic.
I recently purchased a pair of boot cut leggings from an at-home shopping network promoting an active line. I intended on wearing them for my Sunday morning market excursion, but the pants have made it into the office on casual Fridays. It is all in how you style them.
I find athleisure bottoms look best when styled with flowingly, handkerchief hem tops topped off with a cardigan buttoned at your waist. Take it one step further and wear a skinny belt on top of your combination. Don’t forget to add a scarf to elevate the look and give it that comfortable chic feel. Don’t feel shy when it comes to your shoes either. Pair a simple almond toe pump with black leggings and you have chic style.
Now the looks we’ve covered take you from morning to afternoon, but what if you want to go out on the town?
Depending on the venue, you can bring your dark denims with you or opt for a simple dress.
They call it the little black dress for a reason. Investment in a dress that is a staple color, like black, brown, or red. It will give you miles of enjoyment and endless potential.
When you have a night out, take the dress and accessorize it to make it fit your style. Break out a sequined wrap and coordinate it with a clutch bag.
If you’re going to a rock show, find that moto you wore earlier and slip it on with a pair of platform pumps.
I have several black dresses of differing lengths, styles and fabrics, but they are so versatile because you can mix and match with your wardrobe.
Don’t be afraid of taking a black dress and wearing it alone with a statement piece of jewelry. Use the dress as the canvas to showcase your latest bauble.
Statement earrings are going to be popular come when it gets warm, so put up your hair or pin it behind your ear, throw on that big, bold earring and dance the night away.
