Tedi DeMaria matched her school girls pole vault record and came within a whisker of setting a Section 2 meet record at the state qualifier Friday, June 5, at the University at Albany.
DeMaria cleared the bar at 11 feet 9 inches on her first try to win the Group 1 title and made three attempts at clearing the bar at 12 feet, 1 inch. After failing on her first attempt, DeMaria barely clipped the bar on her second try and the bar fell down. DeMaria missed her third attempt.
DeMaria also tried to qualify for states in the triple jump, but she finished second with a distance of 35 feet, 10.25 inches. Columbia’s Nastasja Johnston won the event with a distance of 38 feet, 3.5 inches.
Guilderland is also sending a female athlete to the state meet June 12 and 13 at UAlbany. Emily Burns won the 2,000-meter steeplechase for the Lady Dutch with a time of 6:58.79.
Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk is sending two female athletes to states in Group 2. Karra Douglas finished second in the 200-meter dash with a qualifying time of 26.26 seconds, and Ciara Miller placed second in the high jump after clearing the bar at 5 feet, 2 inches.
On the boys’ side, Guilderland’s Noah Carey will compete in two events at the state meet. The sophomore won the 3,200-meter race with a time of 9:19.84, and he helped the 3,200-meter relay team place second with a qualifying time of 7:45,86. Jonathon Feil, Noah Tindale and Drew Burns also ran on the 3,200-meter relay team.
Guilderland’s Zaviir Berry posted a qualifying height of 6 feet, 3 inches in the boys high jump, where he finished third to Ballston Spa’s Jack Fitzgerald and Amsterdam’s Izaiah Brown. Brown will not be competing in the high jump at states, as he also qualified in the 200- and 400-meter dashes.
Bethlehem’s Simon Powhida won the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:01.01. Saratoga Springs’ Aidan Tooker was second with a time of 10:02.08.
In Group 2, RCS is sending Andrew McHugh to the state meet. McHugh placed second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.14 seconds.
