The Christian Brothers Academy and Colonie girls bowling teams are bound for Syracuse.
CBA recorded the highest boys team score out of the three class levels with a total of 6,084 pins at the Section 2 Class A tournament Wednesday, Feb. 11, at Boulevard Bowl. The Colonie girls claimed the overall Sectional title with a score of 5,391 pins several days earlier.
Colonie will make its second consecutive trip to the state tournament. The Lady Raiders fell short of a state title last year when East Islip from Long Island rallied in the afternoon session to pass them.
“I think we’ll probably see them again,” said Tierra Gulum. “They were a young team last year.”
CBA is making its first trip to states and under trying circumstances. The Brothers learned prior to the start of the Class A tournament that their coach, Tom Donato, died of a heart attack the night before. Brian McGraw and Marty Capullo Jr. stepped in for Donato at Sectionals, and they watched as CBA rallied in the sixth game to pass Columbia for the team title.
Dom Savona paced CBA with a six-game series of 1,344 pins. Zeph Kozakiewics had a six-game series of 1,304 pins.
Gulum and Amanda Chrzanowski were the leading bowlers for Colonie at the girls Class A tournament Thursday, Feb. 5. Gulum had a six-game series of 1,181, while Chrzanowski rolled a 1,174 series
