Bethlehem’s Grace Smith capped her high school outdoor track and field season by winning the state and Federation titles in the girls high jump at the New York State Championships June 6 and 7 at Cicero-North Syracuse High School.
The junior cleared the bar at 5 feet, 7 inches to earn the Division 1 (large school) championship, and she earned the tiebreaker over Division 2 champion Hailey Rospierski of Alden to claim the Federation title.
Bethlehem native and Academy of Holy Names senior Leah Triller also won state and Federation championships at the meet. Triller won the 800-meter race with a time of 2:13.10, two-tenths of a second ahead of Division 1 champion Kamryn McIntosh of Suffern.
Triller also helped Holy Names’ 1,600-meter relay team place third in the Division 2 race with a time of 3:59.47. She later ran the anchor leg on her school’s 3,200-meter relay team that placed fifth among small schools and 15th overall with a time of 9:33.46.
Guilderland’s Emily Burns placed 10th in Division 1 and 17th overall in the 2,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 7:31.45. Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk’s Karra Douglas reached the Division 2 100-meter dash semifinals, where she finished with a time of 12.62 seconds – good for 10th place.
On the boys’ side, Bethlehem’s Brian Greenberg had two strong efforts in the triple jump. On Friday, June 6, Greenberg placed third in the Division 1 triple jump with a distance of 47 feet, 3.5 inches. Then on Saturday, June 7, Greenberg was fourth in the Federation final with a distance of 46 feet, 1.5 inches.
Two more Bethlehem athletes competed at the state meet. Noah Bell was sixth in Division 1 and seventh overall in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:35.90, and Stephen Booker placed eighth in Division 1 and 10th overall in the 3,200-meter race with a time of 9:22.99.
