The Bethlehem doubles team of Elizabeth Buckley and Aria Shi won the consolation bracket at this weekend’s New York State Public High School Athletic Association girls tennis tournament at Latham’s Tri City Tennis Club.
Buckley and Shi defeated Monroe-Woodbury’s Isabel Arias and Lisa Weissburg 8-1 in the consolation finals to complete their two-day run at the state tournament with a 4-1 record.
After losing to eighth-seeded Katie Cirella and Rhea Malhotra of Syosset 6-0, 6-3 in Saturday’s opening round, Buckley and Shi pulled out three wins to reach Sunday’s consolation bracket final. They got past Sauquoit Valley’s Ella Brutsky and Dana Bever 8-4 in a pro set match and then rallied from a 7-1 deficit to defeat Orchard Park’s Kristen Zablonski and Rachel Johnson 9-8 in the quarterfinals.
Buckley and Shi edged Warwick’s Caroline Seeberg and Juliana Marcolini 9-8 in the consolation semifinals before meeting Arias and Weissburg.
