The Shaker football team opened training camp for the 2013 season with holes to fill on both sides of the ball.
Several players who helped the Blue Bison win their first Section II Class AA title last year graduated, including quarterback Chris Landers, defensive tackle Schuyler Huntington and tailbacks Ryan Griffin and Kenny Jackson.
“We had a great veteran group last year, but now we have to see what the next group has,” said Shaker coach Greg Sheeler.
Fullback/linebacker Jake Quay is one of the few holdovers from last year’s team.
“Our big focus this year is using last year as something to drive us, but not focusing on last year, either,” said Quay. “We have different talent this year.”
Many of the players got a jump on their preparations during a team camp two weeks ago, which Quay said should serve them well during the first week of training camp.
“For those who showed up … it should be a snap,” said Quay.
Sheeler said he likes the talent he has coming up from last year’s junior varsity team.
“We have some good depth, but it will be interesting to see who will step up for us,” said Sheeler.
The Blue Bison have only three weeks to prepare for their season opener on Friday, Sept. 6, against LaSalle.
“Everyone is excited,” said Quay. “Everyone is amped.”
