The way coach Mike Joyce sees it, the Colonie boys lacrosse team can only go up from its 3-13 season in 2012.
“We have to focus on ourselves and try to get better as the season goes on,” said Joyce. “We didn’t do that last year.”
The Garnet Raiders’ roster is heavy on junior talent. Their top four scorers – Mike Mineau, Kyan Gaddy, Chris West and Alex Linder – all hail from the Class of 2014.
“I think we have a lot better leadership on the team, and we’re closer,” said Mineau. “That will help us turn it around.”
Mineau has two key roles this year as he moves from attack to midfield – continue to score goals, and win face-offs.
“I think it’s a good challenge,” said Mineau. “I’ve just got to do what the team needs me to do.”
“He’s been looking good so far,” said Joyce. “He goes after ground balls aggressively, and he’s not afraid of contact.”
Senior goaltender Brendan Deady anchors Colonie’s defense.
“I think he’s one of the top three or four goalies in the area,” said Joyce. “He worked hard in the off-season. Attending camps, playing (on) travel teams – you name it, he did it.”
Colonie gets its first taste of lacrosse action Saturday when it travels to Schenectady for a non-league game. The Garnet Raiders then host Shaker April 2 in their Suburban Council South Division opener.
