The Colonie boys basketball team posted its biggest win of the season by knocking off Suburban Council North Division leader Shaker 58-49 in Friday’s cross-divisional game.
The Garnet Raiders (5-5 league, 6-6 overall) built a 31-28 halftime lead and expanded it by outscoring the Blue Bison (8-2, 10-2) 13-4 in the third quarter.
Godfrey Freeman scored 13 points, and Jake Samuels contributed 12 points for Colonie. Zach Yakel netted 14 points for Shaker.
Elsewhere, Bethlehem had little trouble with Niskayuna in a 76-49 cross-divisional victory in Delmar.
The Eagles (9-1, 11-1) jumped out to a 19-9 lead in the first quarter, and they never looked back as they overtook Shaker for the best record in the Suburban Council.
John Sica poured in 16 points, while Nate Kane, Jason Clas and Matt McKenna each added 13 points for Bethlehem. Brandon Fine’s 21 points paced Niskayuna (1-8, 1-8).
In the Central Hudson Valley League Friday, Loudonville Christian School ripped apart New Lebanon 76-18. The Eagles (8-0, 11-1) raced out to a 31-7 lead within the first eight minutes, and they poured it on from there.
Mat Yamin’s 20 points led four LCS players in double figures. James Hilton contributed 14 points, Gabe Brown chipped in with 12 points and Jonny Dariano added 10 points.
Hockey
Shenendehowa coach Juan de la Rocha earned his 200th career victory Friday as the Plainsmen defeated Shaker/Colonie 5-2 in a Capital District High School Hockey League game at the Clifton Park Arena.
Jeff Bink scored 39 seconds into the first period to give the visiting Jets (6-1-1 league, 7-2-2 overall) a 1-0 lead, but goals by Dave Hunter, Riley Irving and Kyle Marr put the Plainsmen (6-1-1, 8-5-1) ahead for good.
Brad Tardif and Ryan Mortka added second period goals for Shen. Andrew Serafino tallied in the third period for Shaker/Colonie.
Hunter finished the game with a goal and two assists, and Peter Russo added four assists for Shen. Goaltender Brian Walter stopped 21 shots.
Girls basketball
The Shenendehowa girls basketball team survived a poor shooting night to defeat Columbia 28-16 in Friday’s Suburban Council game in Clifton Park.
The Lady Plainsmen (6-3 league, 8-3 overall) made only 11 shots from the field and went 6-for-17 from the free throw line, but they still managed to beat the Blue Devils.
Carly Boland scored 15 points for Shen.
Boys swimming
Gloversville earned a 107-67 victory over Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk in Friday’s boys swim meet in Gloversville.
Leyton Spencer picked up wins in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard backstroke for Ravena. Sam Datri added a victory in the 1-meter diving competition.
